Mt. Tambora: A Killer Volcano from Indonesia by Kathy Furgang, X
The power of a volcanic eruption is one of nature's most dangerous forces. From the beginning of recorded time, volcanoes have continually changed Earth's surface and weather patterns. Each of these books, which are written to accompany and enhance an earth science curriculum, describes the composition of planet Earth, the different types of volcanoes, and the geologic events that bring about an eruption. This dynamic series takes a look at six of the most important active volcanoes on Earth and the big blasts that have altered the history of humankind. The 1815 eruption of this volcano was the most deadly explosion of any volcano in recent history. Nearly 92,000 human deaths were attributed to the blast from this Indonesian volcano.

Hawaii Volcano Watch: A Pictorial History, 1779-1991 by Thomas L. Wright,
Hawaii Volcano Watch: A Pictorial History, 1779-1991 by Thomas L. Wright,
More than two hundred years of volcano watching in Hawaii is captured in this pictorial history by three contemporary volcano watchers. Volcanoes have been observed and records have been made of their activity since the early Polynesians recognized the Hawaiian Islands as volcanic and incorporated their awareness of volcanic processes into legends and chants. This illustrated summary of eruptions and earthquakes on the island of Hawaii from the time of Captain Cook's voyage in the late eighteenth century to recent, on going events at Kilauea includes early maps, paintings, drawings, and photographs made by volcano watchers. Lucid, thought provoking, and superbly illustrated, this work highlights the accomplishments of both scientists and lay observers: the Reverend Titus Coan, James D. Dana, Sarah Joiner Lyman, Thomas A. Jaggar, Jerry Eaton, and others. The authors describe the conditions under which the early observers worked, the methods available to them, and the insights they gained through observation. The book also traces the development of volcanology in Hawaii and the history of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. It concludes by discussing future challenges to coexistence with Hawaii's active volcanoes.

Medicine Lake Volcano - Medicine Lake Volcano is a large shield volcano in the northeastern California about 50 kilometres (30 miles) northeast of Mount Shasta. The volcano is located in a zone of east-west crustal extension east of the main axis of the Cascade Range.

Tweed Volcano - Tweed Volcano was a prehistoric shield volcano in northeastern New South Wales, Australia, that erupted over a hotspot that existed over this part of the continent between 23 million and 20 million years ago. Mount Warning, Tweed Valley and Byron Bay are among the remnants of this volcano that was originally approximately 100 km in diameter and twice the height of Mount Warning today.

Newberry Volcano - Newberry Volcano 7,985 ft (2,434 m) high is a large shield volcano located 40 miles (60 km) east of the Cascade Range and about 20 miles (30 km) southeast of Bend, Oregon. It is not a typical shield volcano in that, in addition to erupting basaltic lavas, it also has erupted andesitic and even rhyolitic lava.

Shield volcano - A shield volcano is a wide volcano with shallowly-sloping sides. The name derives from a translation of "Skjaldbreiưur", an Icelandic shield volcano whose name means broad shield, from its resemblance to a warrior's shield.
